Circulation

Not moving or using muscles and in some specific health conditions, lymphatic fluid can accumulate causing a build up of toxins. Swedish massage provides effective lymphatic drainage and improved blood circulation bringing relief and restoring flow and balance and when essential oils for fluid balance are also used, the effects provide enhanced relief and detoxification.

Stress Relief

The deeply relaxing physical effects of Swedish massage improve mood by promoting the production of dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin in the brain. These hormones act to stabilize your mood, helping you feel happy and positive. A Swedish massage can also act to reduce the production of cortisol, a stress-causing hormone, thereby reducing emotional and physical stress. Combined with a personalised selection of essential oils further boosts these beneficial effects.

Pain Relief

The specific movement techniques of Swedish massage help to stimulate nerves located in different parts of the body. These nerves can be stimulated in a way that helps to manage pain and discomfort. The comforting and releasing actions of the movements combined with specific essential oils relieve tension gathered in painful knots and adhesions that ease back pain and other areas of chronic pain.

More About Swedish Massage

Johan Georg Mezger

Swedish Massage was developed by Johann Georg Mezger, a Dutch physician who was noted for studying French massage techniques and their effects on physical healing. Unlike deep tissue massage, Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage, this pressure adjustment makes it deeply relaxing. Swedish massage therapy utilises a combination of five primary massage techniques.

1. Effleurage - to warm-up the muscles and soothe them out.
2. Petrissage - for improving blood circulation and helps to detoxify the body.
3. Friction - for softening and realigning tense muscle fibres
4. Vibration - to loosen and relax the body and especially useful for soothing nerves.
5. Tapotement - for relaxing tight muscles and for draining lymphatic build up.

The body responds to Swedish massage both mechanically as the soft tissues are worked and through reflexes as the nervous system responds to physical stimulation, promoting positive body awareness and connection. The mind responds in tandem to this, helping to reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety, ease emotional trauma and create a feeling of well being and enhanced self-esteem.

Your Swedish massage treatment and consultation will last around either 60 or 90 minutes. We begin with an introductory consultation to define your specific needs, discuss any medical conditions or pregnancy - working with you to select your essential oils and determine the focus of your treatment.

Depending on the duration of the treatment and areas of the body chosen to work on, you will need to remove jewellery and any clothing covering these areas, in general, wearing loose comfortable old clothing is best. It's best to avoid heavy meals and alcohol in the hours leading up to your massage.

Being content, warm and comfortable during your treatment is important for relaxation. The option to play music will help you to unwind or if you'd prefer not to have it, the treatment can be quiet, this also goes for talking. Remaining sensitive to how much you want to communicate is paramount, allowing you to gain the most from your experience.
